The title is based on the Gates of the Ancients – mystical portals that connect different regions and provide access to the sleeping mother of dragons Mala-Shae and her offspring, dormant since the Dark Wars. The key role of Aroch, an Elder Breed lizard, becomes apparent as he has the unique ability to unlock these gates, requiring the alliance of Wrynn and Aroch to awaken the other dragons and join forces against the looming threat of the Desert Lords.

In Earth, users take control of Wrynn, armed with an arsenal of weapons, spells and items to battle opponents and solve complex puzzles.
