Gears of War 4 supports both multiplayer mode and single-player story campaign. The action takes place 25 years after the events of the third part. JD, the son of Marcus Fenix, becomes the main character. The Lambents and Locust Horde ended their war 25 years later, leaving only devastation, destroyed lands and the bodies of millions of creatures.

Human civilization is being revived thanks to the efforts of the Coalition of United States. The actions of most survivors are aimed at progressing again, repairing the destruction and starting a new life. However, most of the planet Sera is still in ruins. Tribes of Exiles, called Outsiders, fight the people and resist restoration. Wartime laws continue to exist, and no one is allowed to go beyond the city walls.

In the gameplay you will control JD. In a co-op playthrough, other participants take control of Del and Kate. Together you will need to navigate vast locations and fight opponents. Sometimes you need to confront monsters and huge bosses. The character has an inventory with 4 items that can be changed as he progresses. The ward uses a machine gun that holds more than 500 rounds of ammunition in the magazine without reloading. He also uses grenades and additional equipment.
