The game provides various tools with which you can carry out heists, rescue missions, assassinations and captures. Once players board the starship, they can complete various missions, encountering a variety of enemies along the way.

In Heat Signature, the best way to learn how to effectively use the game's tools is to play the Defector missions, which unlock as you defend each outpost. They put the hero in the character's place with two tools: one for the left mouse button and one for the right. Then you have to control the ship and complete the task using a limited set of tools, obtaining additional useful items. This allows you to understand the different ways to use gadgets.

In missions of higher difficulty, enemies become tougher, there are more of them and they have deadly weapons and durable armor. There are special teleports that allow you to dodge bullets and then return you to your starting point after 2 seconds. There are Subverters that reprogram enemy turrets to work for the player.

The missions themselves are not the same: the layouts of each ship and their crews are procedurally generated and many have additional conditions. Some of them have strict time limits, and racing against a countdown timer on a large enemy ship filled with armor and shields can become extremely challenging. Others are sent to starships that are in active war zones and are under missile attack.
