Midtown Madness is an arcade racing game. At one time, the project stood out from other representatives of the genre due to the presence of an open world. In it, races are held not on separate tracks, but on the streets of a metropolis. This allows users to choose their own routes when passing checkpoints. Chicago was taken as the basis. The virtual metropolis has sights from the real world. Cars drive through the village and pedestrians walk. Passers-by are not allowed to be crushed because they jump away at the very last moment. In addition to city traffic, police cars are also seen on the roads.

In the Russian translation, the title is known under the alternative and comic title Assholes against the Traffic Police. In the game you can drive a Ford Mustang GT, Fastback and Cruiser, Panoz Roadster and Esperante GTR-1, F-350, Freightliner Century, Cadillac Eldorado and a bus. Initially, only half of the fleet is available. The rest of the cars are unlocked as you progress. In case of collisions, damage is displayed on car models. In addition to the single player, the video game has multiplayer. It is available on the local network and via the Internet. Only in it players can try on a police uniform.

There are several modes to choose from:

• Checkpoint Race – races with bots through checkpoints;
• Cruise – free driving around the city, allowing you to explore the roads well;
• Blitz Races – races against time, where you need to pass all the checkpoints and meet the timer;
• Circuit Race is a classic competition where you need to skate several laps and reach the finish line before your opponents;
• Cops & Robbers is a version of Capture the Flag, in which bandits try to take gold to their hideout, and the cops try to stop them.
