Main character Starbound, being a member of the alliance of six races, goes to the Protector awards ceremony. An unexpected disaster occurs at the ceremony. An alien creature attacks the world and in a matter of minutes destroys continents with huge tentacles. The central character manages to board the spaceship and pick up the matter manipulator, after which he sets off on a long journey.

Arriving at the first inhabited world, he begins a new chapter in his own life. After the destruction of his home planet, the protagonist receives certain quests based on finding survivors and interacting with them. Worlds are procedurally generated and given specific features. The worlds have dynamic weather, changing times of day, many territories, cities, etc. More than a million randomly generated firearms and bladed weapons have been added to the gameplay.

Starbound Playable Races:

• Florans are cannibal plants, a cruel and impulsive faction. They can use the technologies of other races, skillfully mastering reverse engineering.
• Avians are bird-like creatures without wings. They have powerful weapons that cannot be repeated again, since they were donated by a race that has long ceased to exist in the universe.
• Humans live on Earth, where a unified empire was created. Technologically advanced and capable of traveling through space.
• Glitches (The Glitch) are mechanized creatures that arrived from the medieval age. Their task is to build, evolve and progress. Many continued to work as their creators intended, only a small part went in search of the truth.
• Apexes are humanoid monkeys. With the help of research apices, they were able to prevent extinction and modernize their own mental performance.
• The Novakid are the children of the new star. They were created thanks to the elements of the sun, and history is silent about this faction.
