In the gameplay of Trainz Railroad Simulator 2006, the user will have to lay a railway, manage stations and the work of employees. It is possible to take control of any train in order to drive it yourself. There are mini-tasks against time. The gamer will need to get from one point to another in a limited timer, having previously taken control of the locomotive. Physics includes many small details, for example, the sliding of wheels on rails when braking.

The three-dimensional map has tracks for hundreds of kilometers, and different locomotives travel along it dynamically. An in-game map editor with numerous options is available. The user can install scenery, add lowlands and hills, railway tracks, water reservoirs, forests or buildings. The carriages are customizable by changing the external color or adding pictures. The view comes from both first and third person. The player is able to play the role of a passenger and observe the views from a regular carriage.
