Novella The Genius of Lies takes the player to the fairytale land of Hollafken, where people's superpowers and magic are determined by how well they can lie. The story centers on a girl named Lotte, who can't lie no matter how hard she tries. Klaus, the best liar, comes to her every day and tells her about his feelings, but she doesn't believe his words at all.

The story of Usotsuki Genius begins with a boy telling a girl that he will confess to her for real on April 1st, when many people in the kingdom will be able to tell the truth. Lotte knows that this is a lie again, but she has other hopes for it. She has to wait for the appointed day to find out the boy's true feelings. She thinks that if he constantly lies, he might tell the opposite of the truth, but he refuses to do so, afraid of saying something wrong.

The gameplay includes dozens of puzzles and interactive moments where the gamer will need to solve logical problems and complete quests. The plot advances as the speed of overcoming obstacles and tasks. The user controls a girl who often communicates with secondary characters and visits a guy named Klaus. She is waiting for the day when he can tell the truth and it will be impossible not to believe him. The user will need to make tricks to determine who is lying and who is telling the truth.
